Story
For the next several weeks we will be working up to the unit writing prompt, which is a story.
We will focus our writing lessons and practice on skills that the students will need to be successful in this genre of writing.
We will also continue working with the 6 Traits to strengthen our writing.
Writing Prompt: Adapting
Tell a story about a character who succeeds by adapting to a new situation. Focus on an event that show this person's resourcefulness. Your story may be real or imagined.
Purpose: Entertain the reader
Audience: Your classmates
Traits of a Good Story
Focus/Ideas - The story is focused on one event.
Organization - The story has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Voice - The main character has a distinctive voice, which gives the reader an idea of his or her personality.
Word Choice - The writer has used time-order words and other clues to show the sequence of events.
Sentences - The first sentence grabs the reader's attention. Fragments may be used for effect.
Conventions - Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar are used throughout the story.
