Compare and Contrast Essay
For the next several weeks we will be working up to the unit writing prompt, which is a compare and contrast essay.
We will focus our writing lessons and practice on skills that the students will need to be successful in this genre of writing.
We will also continue working with the 6 Traits to strengthen our writing.
Writing Prompt: Inventors and Artists
Write an essay comparing and contrasting and invention of long ago with a modern invention. Explain how they are alike and different in the way they affected people. Use clue words such as like, also, but, and unlike to signal similarities and differences.
Purpose: Compare and contrast two inventions.
Audience: Your teacher or another adult
Traits of a Good Compare and Contrast Essay
Focus/Ideas - The essay explains the similarities and differences between two kinds of inventions.
Organization - The writer has organized the essay into paragraphs, using transition words to signal comparisons and contrasts.
Voice - The voice is lively and informative. The writer provides supporting details about the two things being compared and contrasted.
Word Choice - The writer uses specific words to explain similarities and differences.
Sentences - Sentence structure is correct.
Conventions - Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar are used throughout the essay.
